Sky comedy I Hate Suzie is officially returning for a second season today (Tuesday 20th December), following the series’s renewal back in early 2021.
The show, co-created by Billie Piper and Lucy Prebble (Succession), debuted in August 2020. And while fans will be ecstatic that the new season has arrived just in time for Christmas, filming for season 2 was a prospect that Piper had actually initially called “terrifying”.
“The idea of doing it again is terrifying. I think we found a way and we’re going to start writing it at the end of the year,” she exclusively told Radio Times in May 2021.
The I Hate Suzie cast for season 1 starred Piper in the leading role as as Suzie Pickles, a mainstream actress and sci-fi icon whose phone has recently been hacked, with intimate photos of her in a ‘compromising position’ leaked onto the internet.
The series was at once painfully funny and incredibly awkward to watch (check out our I Hate Suzie review), as Suzie goes through the ‘Stages of Grief’ as she struggles to come to terms with the phone hack, experiencing denial, fear, shame, bargaining, guilt, anger, and finally acceptance.
The ‘Stages of Grief’ format meant that some viewers considered Suzie’s story complete – but equally, the first season did leave a number of loose threads and potential avenues for a second season, including the departure of Suzie’s manager and best friend Naomi (Leila Farzad).
Series star Nathaniel Martello-White (who plays Carter, with whom Suzie has an affair) previously told Metro.co.uk that he thought the show felt “complete”: “You know when you watch something like I May Destroy You and you get to the end and that feels complete and it really feels like a complete journey? That’s how I feel with I Hate Suzie… You’d love to see more but also why spoil something that feels complete.”
How will the second season compare to the first? Read on to find out everything you need to know about I Hate Suzie season 2.

I Hate Suzie season 2 plot: What will happen?
**Warning: spoilers ahead for I Hate Suzie season 1**
I Hate Suzie season 1 followed Suzie Pickles, a married actress whose phone is hacked – and who realises that a ‘compromising’ image has been leaked, showing her with a man who is ostensibly not her odious husband Cob (Daniel Ings).
While the show isn’t based on Billie Piper’s own life, it does seem to riff on her most famous on-screen role, Rose Tyler in Doctor Who. Suzie is likewise best known for starring in a fictional popular sci-fi series, Quo Vardis (pronounced like “TARDIS”), playing Captain Brea.
Piper told Radio Times magazine in August last year that she drew on her own personal experiences to play Suzie – a former child pop star who becomes a TV actress – stating: “I know exactly what that feels like and I’m sure it feeds into my performance.
“I’m only coming to terms with a lot of it right now. In my 20s a lot of my stress from that period was buried, and I still struggle to remember a lot of it.”
I Hate Suzie, while being painful to watch at points, is also hilarious and stuffed with one-liners (“These people aren’t nice! They’re just already rich.”).
“Don’t w**k to lies!” Suzie tells a packed audience at a Comic Con event, while her manager and best friend, Naomi (Leila Farzad), also attempts damage control (“I’m sorry the world’s seen your d**k, but also – f**k off, slightly”).
Season 1 left a number of loose threads, as Suzie prepared to divorce her husband, while salvaging her career without the help of the indispensable Naomi (who said she was leaving to visit Iran) – and also appears to learn she’s pregnant, presumably from her affair with showrunner Carter (Nathaniel Martello-White).
The second season will see the return of child star turned actress Suzie Pickles, (Piper). Viewers can expect to see her with a new agent, a new PR team and a new job – dancing for likes on ‘Dance Crazee’, a reality TV competition that has the audience hooked.
As the synopsis states: “Having lost everyone that matters to her, Suzie returns to her first love – the public. In this three-part anti-Christmas, Christmas special, Suzie fights to regain the love of the British public whilst her personal life spirals out of control. Will she win their hearts / votes? And restore her reputation? And at what cost?”
